Test Instructions
Follow these guidelines carefully before your test to ensure accurate laboratory results.
GENERAL URINE
- First morning urine is preferable. The sample should be collected in a sterile container.
You can request one from the laboratory. - Clean the genital area or bathe before collecting the sample.
- Discard the first part of the urine and then collect the middle portion in the container, discarding the last portion.
- Bring it to the laboratory within 2 hours. Do not refrigerate.
URINARY CULTURE
- Use a sterile container available from the laboratory. A pediatric bag is used for infants.
- You should NOT have sexual intercourse the day before collecting the sample.
- Before collecting the sample, perform genital cleansing with soap and water.
- The ideal sample is first thing in the morning, as follows:
discard the first part of the urine and then collect the middle portion in the container, discarding the
final portion. - You should NOT collect a urine sample during the menstrual period.
- Bring the sample to the laboratory within 2 hours;
do not refrigerate. - For infants, thoroughly clean the external genitalia, then insert the pediatric bag.
If the baby has not urinated within one hour of inserting the bag, remove the bag, clean it again, and insert a new bag.
GENERAL STOOL
- The sample should be collected in a sterile container.
You can request one from the laboratory. - If the patient is a minor and wears a diaper, the sample should be collected
as soon as possible after defecation and transferred to a sterile container. - If the sample is delivered to the laboratory as soon as possible, it is recommended that a series be performed for 3 consecutive days or every other week to confirm the absence of parasites.
HIDDEN BLOOD IN FECES
- Collect a fresh sample in a clean container and bring it to the laboratory as soon as possible.
- 3 days before beginning stool sample collection, avoid:
- Red meat, such as beef, lamb, or liver.
- Raw fruits and vegetables.
- Vitamin C, such as fruit juices with vitamin C and vitamin C supplements in doses greater than 250 milligrams (mg) per day.
- Pain relievers, such as aspirin and ibuprofen.
STOOL CULTURE
- Do not use laxatives to obtain the sample.
- Empty the stool directly into a clean container, not into the toilet bowl. Use the scoop provided
in the lid of the container to collect a small portion of the stool (about the size of an olive). If possible, select the portion that contains blood, mucus, or pus. - Send the stool immediately. If not possible, place the samples in the refrigerator (do not freeze) and send them within two hours.
SPERM CULTURE
- Do not have sexual intercourse or self-stimulate for 3 days before the test.
- Unless medically indicated, collect the sample before taking antibiotics. If you took antibiotics, 3 days must pass before collecting the sample.
- The sample should be obtained only through masturbation, and the entire sample (ejaculate) should be collected directly into the vial.
Do not use lubricants or condoms. Send the sample immediately. If this is not possible, send the sample within two hours (keep refrigerated).
SPERMOGRAM
- Do not have sexual intercourse or self-stimulate for 3 days before the test.
- Do not perform the test after more than 5 days of sexual abstinence.
- The sample must be obtained only through masturbation, and the entire sample (ejaculate) must be collected directly into the vial.
- Do not use lubricants or condoms. You must close the vial and keep the sample at body temperature until you deliver it to the laboratory, within 20 minutes of sample collection.
